ActiveTechnical ceramics made 100% from industrial solid waste — notably ReThink Seramic Flora, a ceramic that stores heat at temperatures up to 1250°C for thermal energy storage in concentrated solar power and industrial waste-heat recovery, produced via what the company calls a 100 percent carbon-offset process.
Seramic Materials up-cycles industrial solid waste — incinerator ash, steel-industry by-products and similar streams — into high-value ceramic products at a lower cost and carbon footprint than conventional ceramics. The technology came out of the Masdar Institute / Khalifa University research ecosystem: the company signed an IP agreement with Khalifa University to commercialise five patents, and the underlying research represents roughly $2 million of R&D over more than a decade, 27 scientific publications and 6 patents. Established in the Masdar City Free Zone in June 2019, it operates a headquarters in the Accelerator Building and a separate Materials Lab in Masdar City Tech Park — the first laboratory in the GCC dedicated to industrial solid waste valorisation. Its flagship product, ReThink Seramic Flora, was billed as the world's first thermal energy storage product made entirely from recycled materials; its first commercial client, StorEnergy DOO, ordered 24 tonnes for a project in Spain, and a 3 MWh thermal-storage trial ran with CIEMAT in Spain. It was supported by The Catalyst (a Masdar-BP initiative), the Mohammed bin Rashid Innovation Fund and Future100, and was selected for Dubai Holding's Innovate For Tomorrow accelerator in 2026.
