Switch Foods makes plant-based meat alternatives designed for Arab recipes rather than Western formats, on the argument that regional consumers will switch only if the products fit dishes they already cook. Its 20,000 sq ft factory in the Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD) was inaugurated in April 2023 and was the emirate's first plant-based meat facility. Products reached over 130 stores across Carrefour, Spinneys, Waitrose, Géant, Union Coop, Sharjah Co-op and LuLu, plus Talabat, Careem, Kibsons and InstaShop, and the company has expanded into Lebanon, Kuwait and Qatar. It reported roughly Dh2m revenue in a partial 2023 and projected about Dh10m from the UAE alone in 2024, with 34 employees as of early 2024. Founder Edward Hamod, an Ohio State science graduate, also advises the UAE Minister of State for Food and Water Security.
